EMCI Register Partner for certification in Saudi Arabia

On 6 April 2023, Saudi Arabia adopted its "Technical Regulations for Recreational Craft" (TRP) reference MA-191-23-05-01-01. At first glance, the regulations are very similar to the EU Recreational Craft Directive, with similar standards, but it has much stricter certification requirements.

Like RCD, but different

The regulations are almost a copy of the EU Recreational Craft Directive (RCD). However, there are some very noticeable differences. One obvious difference is that all labels and builder plates must be in Arabic, but perhaps the most significant difference is that any product within the scope of TRP must be certified by a recognised body.

In contrast, the RCD only requires higher-risk pleasure craft to be certified. Moreover, repeated factory visits are mandatory for constant production control by an approved body. The next significant difference relates to standards. While the RCD proposes harmonised standards as one method of meeting the essential requirements of the directive, TRP mandates compliance with a specific list of standards.

This is then often but not always the latest standard on the ISO website. Because of the lag effect, this means that EU manufacturers should keep a close eye on this, as a lot has changed recently at ISO while it is not yet applied in the EU.
